Nancy Benco is an Associate Research Professor of Anthropology specializing in Old World archaeology, particularly ceramics and complex societies. Her expertise spans Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Islamic archaeology, with a regional focus on North Africa and the Near East. She has conducted fieldwork in Morocco, Turkey, Iraq, and Peru.
- Education: Ph.D. (1986) from SUNY Binghamton, Certificate in Ceramic Analysis (1984) from MIT, M.A. (1981) from The George Washington University, and B.A. from Wittenberg University.
Her research emphasizes ceramic analysis, craft production, and the archaeology of Islamic societies. She has led excavations at al-Basra, Morocco, and serves as a pottery consultant for international projects. Her publications include studies on pottery production, glass beads, and bone tools in medieval contexts.
Benco teaches courses such as 'Old World Prehistory,' 'Archaeology Field/Laboratory Research,' and 'Technology.' Her work bridges archaeological methodologies with historical interpretations of material culture.
