Dr. Clare Burke is an associated researcher at the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. Her work focuses on interdisciplinary archaeological studies of ceramic technology and consumption practices in prehistory. She holds a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Sheffield (2017), an MSc in Archaeomaterials (2006), an MA in Professional Archaeological Practice (2005), and a BSc in Archaeology (2004), all from UK institutions.
Her research combines laboratory-based methods like petrography and SEM analysis with diachronic perspectives to investigate Neolithic and Bronze Age societies in Greece, the Balkans, and beyond. Key projects include studies on Early Bronze Age ceramics in mainland Greece, analyses of pottery from Phenoes (Greece), Midea (Greece), and Korinthia (Greece), as well as Neolithic ceramics from Turkey and Serbia. She has also contributed to Bronze Age studies in Bulgaria and Croatia.
Beyond research, Clare has taught undergraduate and master’s courses in archaeology and petrography at the University of Sheffield (2009–2017), and has extensive fieldwork experience in UK commercial archaeology. Her work explores links between pottery technology, dietary practices, and socio-economic dynamics in ancient craft production.
