Joe Mazzaferro is an Associate Professor of Practice in Jazz and Associate Director of Jazz Studies at the University of the Pacific's Conservatory of Music. He previously held roles as Coordinator of Jazz Studies at California State University, Stanislaus, and taught at Sacramento State and San Joaquin-Delta College. His formal education includes a BM in Music Education from the University of the Pacific (1999) and an MM in Jazz and Studio Music from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2003), where he was a Graduate Teaching Assistant.

As a trumpeter, composer, and educator, Mazzaferro is prominent in Northern California’s jazz scene. His debut album In Terms Of... (2017) peaked at #43 on JazzWeek Charts, praised for its 'vintage hard bop with maturity.' His forthcoming album Only Time Will Tell (2022) features renowned artists like Warren Wolf and Carl Allen. He has arranged works for jazz luminaries including Edward Simon and Terell Stafford, and contributed to Bird at 100, a tribute to Charlie Parker. His 2020 release Talk About It! Live @ The CLARA showcases original compositions and arrangements.
Mazzaferro’s collaborations include performances with Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, and Eddie Gomez, among others. He is Musical Director and Co-Founder of the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra and a member of the Capital Jazz Project. His work emphasizes jazz pedagogy and ensemble performance, balancing academic leadership with active freelance performance.
