James Dubberly is an Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of the Pacific, where he teaches Advanced Improvisation and Intro to Jazz. He also serves as faculty at California State University, Stanislaus, instructing low brass studio, chamber/jazz ensembles, and classroom music courses. He holds a BA in Music from the University of Georgia and an MM in Music from the Hartt School of Music (University of Hartford), where he also participated in a doctoral program and served as an adjunct instructor.
His research interests span jazz, Latin music, and trombone performance, with a focus on composition and arrangement. He leads the Latin jazz orchestra Dharma, whose debut album 'Road Warrior' received critical acclaim. Dubberly is an active performer in Bay Area ensembles like Avance, Pacific Mambo Orchestra, and orchestras such as Townsend Opera Orchestra (principal trombonist).
Award-winning musician, he has collaborated with internationally recognized artists including Arturo O'Farrill and performed in notable venues across genres. He also initiated jazz vespers at Modesto’s First United Methodist Church, serving as musical director.
