Joan M. Teno, M.D., M.S., is an Adjunct Professor of Health Services, Policy, and Practice at Brown University. She is a health services researcher, former hospice medical director, and board-certified internist with expertise in Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Teno's work focuses on improving the quality of end-of-life care for vulnerable populations, particularly those with advanced illness and dementia. She has led national studies, including the SUPPORT intervention analyzing dying experiences and advance directives.
Her research spans hospice utilization, healthcare disparities, and policy impacts on end-of-life care. Dr. Teno has advised major organizations like the Institute of Medicine and World Health Organization. She holds grants from NIH and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, emphasizing translational research to clinical practice.
Awarded the AAHPM Lifetime Achievement Award (2023) and College Fellow of King’s College London (2024), her contributions bridge clinical practice and policy.
