Jay Dudhia serves as Associate Professor in Stem Cell Biology within the Department of Clinical Sciences and Services at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), University of London. His academic journey began with a BSc in Biochemistry and Physiology from Queen Elizabeth College, University of London, followed by a PhD in Molecular Biology in 1984. He advanced through postdoctoral research at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology before joining RVC in 1997, where he established the tendon biology research group in 2003 and developed the Veterinary Medicines Directorate-approved stem cell laboratory.
His research focuses on extracellular matrix biology in articular cartilage and tendons, with major contributions to equine tendinopathy mechanisms and regenerative medicine. Key achievements include pioneering clinical applications of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for equine tendon injuries, developing cardiac stem cell therapies for companion animals, and creating patented Raman spectroscopy techniques for early osteoarthritis detection. His work bridges veterinary and human medicine through collaborations with University College London and clinical partners.
Dudhia holds an Honorary Senior Lectureship at University College London and actively contributes to scientific societies including the British Society for Matrix Biology. His laboratory provides clinical-grade MSC services for equine and canine patients across UK veterinary practices, translating basic research into tangible clinical applications through close collaboration with RVC animal hospitals.
As an educator, he holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education and teaches extracellular matrix biology across BSc BioVeterinary Sciences and BVetMed programs. He supervises undergraduate research projects and serves as an internal/external examiner for postgraduate theses, emphasizing clinical applications of regenerative medicine in his pedagogical approach.
