Jason Smith

Jason Smith is an Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Director of Jazz Studies at Southern Arkansas University (SAU). He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Previously, he served as a professional trumpet player with the United States Air Force Band, leading ensembles like the USAF Band of the West’s “Dimensions in Blue” and holding roles such as road manager and finance manager. At SAU, he directs the Jazz One ensemble, which has achieved national acclaim, including the 2019 Elmhurst Jazz Festival’s “Most Outstanding Big Band” award. His performances span orchestras like the Dayton Philharmonic and San Antonio Symphony, as well as collaborations with renowned artists such as Eddie Daniels and The Miracles.

• Education: BA & MA in Music from University of Arkansas at Monticello

His research and artistic interests focus on jazz performance, big band repertoire, and music education. He has led Jazz One in recording their debut album "The First Time Out" and performing at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. His expertise extends to contemporary big band programming and clinical teaching across high school, college, and professional ensembles.

Advising & Performance Leadership: Directs SAU’s Jazz One ensemble, mentoring students in jazz performance and competition. His performances include tours across the U.S. and five international countries, with recordings spanning big band, classical, and Christian worship music.

Labs/Teams: Leads Jazz One and collaborates with ensembles like the Dayton Jazz Orchestra and San Antonio Jazz Orchestra. He also manages marketing and orchestral roles for Community Bible Church’s music programs.
