Vern Sielert is Professor of Trumpet and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Idaho's Lionel Hampton School of Music, where he also serves as Artistic Director of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. He joined the faculty in 2006 and has previously held positions at the University of Washington, Baylor University, Illinois State University, and Millikin University.

Vern Sielert's research and artistic work centers on jazz performance, trumpet pedagogy, improvisation, and composition. His work bridges academic instruction with professional artistry, influencing both students and the broader jazz community.
His artistic output, including compositions and arrangements, has been performed by prestigious ensembles such as the Count Basie Orchestra and the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors, and recorded by university and professional groups across the U.S., Canada, and Japan. He is recognized for his contributions to jazz trumpet literature through transcriptions published in the Journal of the International Trumpet Guild.

Vern Sielert has directed all-state jazz bands in Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and New Mexico, and has presented at major conferences including those of MENC, IAJE, and state music educator associations. He advises students through studio instruction, jazz ensembles, and improvisation courses, fostering the next generation of jazz musicians. He leads the jazz studies program and oversees the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, a major outreach and performance initiative.
He performs with ensembles such as the Jim Knapp Orchestra, Emerald City Jazz Orchestra, Palouse Jazz Project, Idaho Brass Quintet, and the Bob Curnow Big Band, maintaining a vibrant professional performance schedule alongside his academic duties.
