Jan Kolen is the Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology and a Professor of the History and Heritage of European Cultural Landscapes at Leiden University. He holds a PhD (cum laude) from Leiden University (2005) and has held academic roles at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, including the Belvedere Professorship. His research focuses on cultural landscapes, heritage management, and digital heritage, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. He leads the Centre for Digital Heritage (CDH) and co-directs the Centre for Global Heritage and Development. Recent grants include funding for research on 'traumascapes' (2025). He advises five current PhD candidates and has been recognized for academic excellence, including his doctoral distinction.
