Prof. Dr. Gert-Jan Burgers is a Full Professor in Heritage and History of Cultural Landscapes and Urban Environments at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Faculty of Humanities. He directs the interfaculty CLUE+ research institute, coordinating 250+ researchers across disciplines. He leads the EU-funded Heriland network training PhDs in heritage planning and coordinates projects like 'Exploded View' linking art and landscape management. His work focuses on integrating heritage into spatial planning, with major grants from NWO, EU, and Italian ministries.
Research interests include urban/rural landscapes, critical heritage studies, and participatory approaches to heritage management. He supervises PhDs on topics like participatory heritage initiatives, Apulia's disappearing landscapes, and gendered identities in ancient Italy.
Key grants include the H2020 Marie Curie Heriland (2019–2023), managing archaeological parks in Italy, and projects like 'Challenging Testaccio' in Rome. He advises institutions like the Archaeological Park of Muro Tenente and sits on boards of journals and heritage initiatives.
Teaching focuses on landscape studies, heritage planning, and Mediterranean archaeology. Current courses include 'Planning Heritage in the Participatory Society' and 'Historical Landscapes under Transformation'.
