James Sherry, MD, PhD, is a Clinical Professor and Director of the CUNY Center for Immigrant, Refugee, and Global Health at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy. He holds leadership roles in global health initiatives, including directing the USAID Health Research and Applied Research Development Project (HEARD) and its successor, the Implementation Science Collaborative. His expertise spans reproductive, maternal, child, and adolescent health, with over three decades of experience in program design, implementation, and evaluation across low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Sherry earned his MD from the University of Michigan, PhD in Biochemistry from Carnegie-Mellon University, and residency training in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. He also holds an MBBCH from Cairo University. His career includes roles as Professor and Chair of Global Health at George Washington University, Chief Science Officer at PEPFAR/OGAC, and leadership positions at UNAIDS, UNICEF, and the World Food Program.
His research focuses on immigrant/refugee health policy, rural health systems, global health organizational development, and implementation science. Current projects emphasize multi-country collaborations to strengthen evidence-based health policies. He serves on boards for the United Way of Chautauqua County and the Chautauqua Integrated Delivery Systems, and directs the Chautauqua Health Network.
Dr. Sherry’s academic contributions span biochemistry to global health systems, with notable work on Guinea worm eradication, mHealth innovations, and health diplomacy strategies. His recent publications highlight frameworks for implementation science and maternal/newborn health interventions across diverse settings.
