James Rodde holds the Louise Moen Hamilton Endowed Chair in Music and serves as Director of Choral Activities at Iowa State University. He leads the Iowa State Singers and the 140-voice Iowa Statesmen, while teaching choral conducting and literature. Since 2000, he has expanded the choral program to include 400 undergraduate participants. His choirs have toured internationally and performed at ACDA National Conferences (1993, 1997, 2005, 2009, 2015, 2019) and NCCO National Conferences (2008, 2011).
Education: DMA Choral Conducting (University of Iowa, 1987), MA Choral Conducting (University of Iowa, 1977), BA Music Education (Augsburg College, 1974).
Pre-ISU roles include Director of Choral Studies at University of North Dakota (1985–2000), where he earned the Fine Arts Faculty Award for Teaching.
As a clinician, he has directed All-State and regional ensembles across the U.S., including North Central ACDA Men's Honor Choirs. He founded the ISU Honor Choir in 2000, selecting high school singers via live auditions. His choral editions and arrangements are published by Alliance, Hal Leonard, and others. He served as North Central ACDA Repertoire Chair for Male Choirs for over a decade and leads the Des Moines Choral Society as Artistic Director since 2003.
Notable achievements include student Shelby Sievers winning the 2005 ACDA National Undergraduate Conducting Competition under his mentorship.
