James Orton (1830–1877) was a prominent naturalist and Professor of Natural History at Vassar College, serving as department chairman and curator of its museum. Born in Seneca Falls, New York, he excelled in natural sciences early, publishing articles and inventions in Scientific American. After theological studies, he returned to science, leading expeditions to South America, which inspired his seminal work The Andes and the Amazon. He championed women’s education, authored textbooks like Comparative Zoology, and advocated for Darwinian evolution in curricula. His legacy includes the Orton Prize at Williams College and the Orton School for Girls founded by his daughters.
