Jose G. Tello is an Associate Professor of Biology in the Department of Life Sciences at Long Island University Brooklyn. He holds a B.S. in Biology from Universidad Ricardo Palma (Peru), M.S. in Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research centers on avian biodiversity in Neotropical regions with emphasis on molecular systematics and evolutionary patterns.
Dr. Tello's educational background includes:
- B.S. in Biology, Universidad Ricardo Palma, Lima, Peru (1992)
- M.S. in Ecology, Evolution, and Systematics, University of Missouri-St. Louis (1996)
- Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolution, University of Illinois at Chicago (2004)
His research focuses on molecular systematics, evolution, and biogeography of birds, investigating relationships across taxonomic hierarchies to understand biodiversity origins and Neotropical biogeographic history. His work examines macroevolutionary patterns including behavioral, ecological, and morphological diversification through genomic analyses and field studies across South America.
Dr. Tello has received the following recognition:
- Elected Member, American Ornithological Society (2016)
He teaches undergraduate courses in biology, evolution, genetics, and human biological variation. His research collaborations span the American Museum of Natural History (Research Associate since 2008), Field Museum of Natural History (Research Associate since 2005), and institutions in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. These partnerships facilitate extensive fieldwork in Amazonian and Andean ecosystems for specimen collection and biodiversity documentation.
His laboratory work integrates molecular phylogenetics with biogeographic modeling, maintaining active research teams focused on Neotropical bird systematics and conservation genetics across multiple international field sites.
