Dr. Edson F. Abreu serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Angelo State University (ASU) and Curator of Mammals at the Angelo State Natural History Collections (ASNHC). He maintains active research associate appointments with the University of São Paulo (Brazil), Center for Conservation Genomics (Smithsonian Institution), and American Museum of Natural History.
His research centers on mammalian diversity across three scales: population-level (genetic/morphological variation), taxonomic-level (species/genus classification), and community-level (faunal assemblages). He investigates evolutionary and ecological processes driving Neotropical biodiversity through integrative methods combining fieldwork, morphological analysis, and molecular genetics.
Dr. Abreu specializes in resolving cryptic diversity through taxonomic revisions, phylogenetic reconstruction of evolutionary relationships, and biogeographic identification of high-diversity/endemism zones. His field expeditions focus on Neotropical regions, with research outputs emphasizing mammal systematics, diversification patterns, and conservation-relevant biodiversity documentation. The ASNHC mammal collection serves as the operational hub for his international collaborative network.
