R. Terry Chesser is a Research Associate affiliated with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, where he contributes to the Department of Vertebrate Zoology. He holds a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University (1995) and a B.A. from Georgia State University (1982).
His research focuses on avian systematics, evolution, and biogeography, with specific interests including:
- Systematics of Furnariidae (ovenbirds) and suboscine birds
- South American biogeography (Andean/Amazonian regions)
- Austral migrant ecology
- Coevolution of phabine pigeons and feather lice
- Systematics of Turnicidae (buttonquail)
- Phylogeography of Australian waterbirds
- Australasian bird and mammal evolution
Chesser's publications emphasize taxonomic revisions, conservation genomics, and biogeographic patterns in birds. His frequent contributions to ornithological checklists and collaborative studies on speciation reflect a strong focus on systematic ornithology and molecular phylogenetics, with recent work integrating genomic techniques to resolve complex evolutionary histories.
