James Griesse

James Griesse is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB). He earned his PhD in Spanish from The Catholic University of America (2007), an MA from the University of Maryland, College Park (1997), and a BA from Dartmouth College (1990). His dissertation, Utopia and Postmodernism in Recent Latin American Fiction, reflects his academic focus.

Dr. Griesse’s research explores post-Soviet Cuban narrative and representations of gay subjectivity in Spanish-American literary texts. His work bridges literary criticism with cultural and gender studies, emphasizing contemporary Latin American literature and postmodernist themes.

He teaches Spanish language courses and seminars on Spanish-American culture and literature, including classes like Introduction to Reading Hispanic Literary Text and Literary Tendencies and Masterpieces of Spanish America II. Additionally, he serves as advisor to the USCB Spanish Club.

Dr. Griesse has published articles and presented at conferences in the U.S. and Latin America. His international experiences include studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain, and Puebla, Mexico, as well as participating in educational programs in Nicaragua and Cuba with human rights organizations.
