James Shinn, Jr.

James Shinn, Jr. serves as an Assistant Professor of History in the Department of History within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB), a position he has held since 2022 after teaching at Yale University and Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

Dr. Shinn specializes in 19th-century U.S. history with research expertise in the Civil War and Reconstruction era, U.S.-Cuba relations during Cuba's Ten Years' War (1868-1878), the historical development of the U.S. South, and democratic theory. His current book project investigates the entangled histories of Reconstruction in the United States and Cuba's Ten Years' War, revealing transnational connections between these parallel struggles. He teaches core undergraduate courses including History of America from Discovery to 1865 (HIST B111) and advanced seminars on U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST B492), emphasizing transnational perspectives in American historical analysis.
