Ivan Fernandez is a Professor in the School of Forest Resources at the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture, University of Maine, and a key researcher at the Climate Change Institute. His work focuses on the biogeochemistry of forested ecosystems in the context of climate change, forest management, and air pollution, with a strong emphasis on soil science and environmental sustainability.
His research delves into ecosystem acidification, nitrogen saturation, phosphorus cycling, base cation depletion, and carbon sequestration in forested landscapes. He explores how temperature and moisture changes affect ecological stoichiometry and the resilience of terrestrial and freshwater systems. Fernandez is actively involved in developing adaptation strategies for ecosystem response to climate change and identifying emerging ecological and economic opportunities.
Fernandez's scientific contributions are supported by the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station and the McIntire-Stennis program. He serves on the Maine Climate Council and is helping develop a study plan for PFAS contamination. His work bridges science, policy, and management, aiming to inform sustainable forest and environmental practices.
He is also engaged in graduate education and interdisciplinary research through the Climate Change Institute, contributing to climate science outreach and policy development. His laboratory and field studies are central to understanding long-term ecosystem changes in northern forests.
