معرفی
Shawn Fraver is an Associate Professor of Forest Ecology at the School of Forest Resources, part of the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture at the University of Maine. His research is supported by the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station and the McIntire-Stennis program, with a current focus on long-term forest dynamics in Maine’s Acadian Forest ecosystem under climate change.
Education:
- B.S., The Pennsylvania State University
- M.S., North Carolina State University
- Ph.D., University of Maine
Before joining the University of Maine in 2013, Fraver held faculty and research positions at the University of Minnesota, the U.S. Forest Service Northern Research Station, and Mid-Sweden University. His research spans natural and managed forest systems, emphasizing dendrochronological methods to study forest productivity, disturbance history, and climate-growth relationships.
His primary research interests include:
- Old-growth forest structure and dynamics
- Forest carbon dynamics and storage
- Woody debris and deadwood decomposition
- Tree-tree competition and spatial patterning
- Impacts of salvage logging and natural disturbances
- Climate change effects on forest growth
Fraver’s recent publications (2022–2024) reflect a strong focus on carbon cycling in deadwood, forest recovery after disturbances, and dendrochronological reconstructions of ecological events. His work frequently involves long-term field studies, modeling, and collaborations across institutions, emphasizing empirical data and ecosystem-level processes in boreal and temperate forests.

Advising and Grants:
Fraver actively advises graduate students in forest ecology and related fields. His current advisees include Colby Bosely-Smith (Ph.D.), Christian Hettwer (M.S.), Rachel Poppe (M.S.), and Camilla Seirup (M.S.). He has previously mentored over a dozen M.S. and Ph.D. students. His research is funded by the McIntire-Stennis program (project ME042118) and supported by the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station, indicating sustained external funding for his work.
Labs and Research Teams:
Fraver is affiliated with the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station and collaborates with researchers at the U.S. Forest Service and other universities. His work often involves interdisciplinary teams studying forest carbon, disturbance ecology, and dendrochronology.
