Ivan J. Fernandez is a Professor at the University of Maine, affiliated with both the School of Forest Resources and the Climate Change Institute. His research focuses on the biogeochemistry of forested ecosystems under changing environmental conditions, including impacts of climate change, air pollution, and management practices. Key interests include ecosystem acidification, nitrogen saturation, phosphorus cycling, base cation depletion, ecological stoichiometry, and carbon sequestration strategies.
He explores adaptation strategies for managing terrestrial ecosystems and freshwater resources in the context of climate change, emphasizing both mitigating existing changes and identifying future ecological and economic opportunities. Fernandez holds the title of Distinguished Maine Professor and is based in Orono, ME.
