Christine L. Goodale is the Frank H.T. Rhodes Professor of Environmental Science in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on biogeochemical cycles, particularly carbon, nitrogen, and water dynamics in forest ecosystems, with an emphasis on human-driven impacts like air pollution, climate change, and land-use changes. She uses tools such as whole-ecosystem experiments, stable isotopes, and Earth system models.
Education: Postdoctoral Scientist at The Woods Hole Research Center (2001–2003), Postdoctoral Fellow at the Carnegie Institution of Washington (1999–2001), Ph.D. in Ecology (University of New Hampshire, 1999), M.S. in Ecology (University of New Hampshire, 1995), B.A. in Biology (Dartmouth College, 1992).
Research Interests: Biogeochemistry of forest ecosystems, nitrogen cycling and retention, climate change impacts on forest carbon storage, acid rain recovery, and long-term ecosystem experiments. Her work explores how human activities alter nutrient cycles and affect ecosystem services like clean water and carbon sequestration.
Notable Achievements: Received the Frank H.T. Rhodes Professorship (2021), led NSF-funded interdisciplinary programs, and contributed to major findings on nitrogen saturation and forest resilience. Published over 100 peer-reviewed articles on topics ranging from stable isotope tracing to global climate modeling impacts.
Advising and Grants: Mentored graduate students and postdocs in biogeochemistry and climate science, including RQ Thomas, AM Melvin, and AF Talhelm. Secured grants from NSF-IGERT, DOE, and Cornell’s Atkinson Center.
