Jed P. Sparks is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on plant and microbial physiology controlling biosphere-atmosphere interactions, with emphasis on nitrogen, carbon, and ozone fluxes across ecosystems including deserts, tropical forests, and temperate woodlands.
- Ph.D. (1998) and B.S. (1994) in Ecology
- 2024 AAAS Fellow for contributions to global change ecology
The Sparks Lab employs eddy covariance, isotopic analysis, and molecular methods to study atmospheric compound exchange mechanisms, particularly reactive nitrogen species' impacts on ecosystem function and tropospheric chemistry. His work bridges plant physiology, biogeochemical cycles, and climate science to model terrestrial ecosystem responses to anthropogenic disturbances.
Recent publications from 2004-2008 analyze nitrogen oxide fluxes in Mojave Desert soils, PAN deposition in coniferous forests, and isotopic signatures in foliar nitrogen uptake. Key collaborations span stable isotope applications in animal diet analysis, food web studies, and atmospheric process monitoring.
- 2024: Elected AAAS Fellow
The lab actively promotes anti-racist scientific practices, with documented initiatives for BIPOC researcher collaboration, citation equity, and graduate student support. Current projects investigate oxidative chemistry dynamics in plant-soil-atmosphere systems under climate change scenarios.
