Ingvild Tomren is a Research Fellow in Middle East Studies at the University of Oslo's Faculty of Humanities. Her work focuses on Egyptian popular music, sociolinguistics, and cultural history during the Nahḍa period. She holds a Master's and Bachelor's in Middle Eastern Studies from IKOS (Institute for Comparative Research in Human Culture) and has conducted fieldwork in Cairo.
- PhD Project: Egyptian popular music and protest songs in early 20th century Nahḍa
- Co-editor of Babylon – Nordic Journal for Middle Eastern Studies since 2022
Research interests include how music reflects countercultural movements and marginalized voices in authoritarian contexts. Her publications analyze post-Arab Spring musical expressions and LGBTQ+ themes in Egyptian youth culture.
