Erling Lorentzen Sogge is a Senior Lecturer in Middle East Studies at the University of Oslo's Department of Culture, Religion, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies within the Faculty of Humanities. His research focuses on Palestinian nationalism, refugee camp dynamics, and non-state actors in Lebanon and Palestine. He holds a PhD (2018) and MSc (2014) from the University of Oslo, with additional studies in Arabic at Damascus University (2010) and IFPO Beirut (2011).
He served as Director of the Centre for Islamic and Middle East Studies (Spring 2025) and co-editor of the Babylon journal (2017–2019). His 2021 book The Palestinian National Movement in Lebanon examines governance in the 'Ayn al-Hilweh refugee camp. He has conducted fieldwork in Lebanon, the West Bank, and collaborated with institutions like AUB and An-Najah University.
Teaching includes Arabic language courses (ARA 1010–ARA 3010) and Middle East studies seminars. Awards include a 2022 Palestine Book Award nomination. Media engagements span analyses on Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian refugee crises in outlets like The New Arab and NRK.
