Jacob Høigilt is a Professor of Middle East Studies at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Center for Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IKOS). He holds a PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Oslo (2008). His academic work focuses on language, ideology, and cultural dynamics in the Arab world, particularly in Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, and Tunisia. Current research includes conspiracy theories in Arabic public discourse and the cultural history of the Arabic language, employing digital methods and plain-text analysis.
He has served as a senior researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies. Active in academic administration, he is Deputy Director of the Humit Center for Digital Development in the Humanities. Teaching responsibilities include courses on Middle East theory, Islamist movements, Arabic language, and regional geopolitics.
His research themes span media studies, political Islam, humanitarian aid critique, and language policy. Notable works include co-authored books on hybrid media dynamics in Lebanon/Tunisia and a 2024 analysis of Hasan al-Banna's writings. Recent publications address conspiracy terminology evolution and journalistic practices in transitional democracies.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches, blending political science with cultural and linguistic analysis. He maintains active research collaborations, most recently with the late Kjetil Selvik (NUPI), and regularly contributes to Nordic Middle East studies journals like Babylon and Journal of Arabic and Islamic Studies.
