Dr Ibrahim Abraham is a Lecturer in Sociology at Federation University Australia, affiliated with the Institute of Education, Arts and Community (IEAC). He holds a PhD from the University of Bristol (2012) and has held roles including Hans Mol Research Fellow at ANU (2018-2022), Research Fellow at University of Helsinki (2013-2018), and Research Associate at La Trobe University (2012-2013). His research focuses on sociology of religion, South African culture, queer studies, and popular culture intersections with faith.
Research interests include religion and serious leisure, cultural studies, and post-apartheid South Africa. Notable grants include DFAT’s Increase Awareness of Africa (2019–2021) and Academy of Finland grants on black middle-class morality and youth subcultures in South Africa. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at ANU and affiliated with research groups like RAVE (Researching Adult and Vocational Education) and PeCALE (Pedagogy, Curriculum, Assessment and Learner Engagement).
Teaches units such as Examining Race and Ethnicity and Sociology of Health and Illness. Advisor to PhD candidates in areas like post-apartheid entrepreneurship and peacebuilding in the Philippines. Recognized in the 2024 Elsevier/Stanford global researcher rankings. Current projects include a monograph on Lebanese diaspora literature and a focus on global Anglophone studies.
