Robyn Murning is a PhD candidate and lecturer in the Department of History at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her work focuses on the intersection of memory studies, post-colonialism, and generation studies, with a regional emphasis on post-apartheid South Africa.
Her educational background includes:
- BA in Historical Studies and English Language & Literature from the University of Cape Town (2019, graduated with distinction)
- MA in Global History and International Relations from Erasmus University Rotterdam (2022, graduated cum laude)
Robyn's doctoral research, titled "We feel the agony of apartheid, but we don’t know why: Memory and identity of South Africa’s ‘born free’ generation", investigates how inherited apartheid histories shape identities of South Africa's first post-apartheid generation through frameworks of cultural trauma and generationality. Her work examines the lived experience of historical memory by those who did not directly experience apartheid.
Analysis of her publication and conference activities reveals consistent focus on apartheid's haunting legacies, particularly regarding national self-narratives, gender-based violence, and identity formation in post-transitional South Africa. Her research demonstrates interdisciplinary engagement across historical, sociological, and trauma studies frameworks.
Robyn actively contributes to academic discourse through recent presentations including "The long shadow of apartheid" (February 2025), "Multiethnic Belonging, Identity and Memory" (June 2024), and "The Shadows of Apartheid" (April 2024), addressing generational experiences of South Africa's 'born free' cohort.
