Dr. Lennart Bolliger is an Assistant Professor in the History of International Relations at Utrecht University and a Research Fellow at the University of the Free State’s Department of History. His work focuses on soldiering, anti-colonial struggles, and militarization in African contexts, particularly examining Black soldiers in apartheid South Africa’s security forces during the Cold War. He holds a PhD in International Development from the University of Oxford.

He emphasizes themes like violence, civil-military relations, and inequality, particularly in African contexts. His first book, Apartheid’s Black Soldiers, analyzes Namibian and Angolan soldiers in apartheid forces, while his articles engage with refugee crises, military humanitarianism, and counterinsurgency tactics.
