Professor Emma Tomalin is a Sociologist of Religion at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science. Her work focuses on the intersection of religion and public life, particularly in South/Southeast Asia and East Africa.
Research Interests: She investigates gender dynamics in Buddhism, the role of local faith actors in peacebuilding (notably in the Philippines and Mindanao), and religion's impact on international development, humanitarianism, and environmentalism. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, religious studies, and global development.
Projects: Current initiatives include the Hidden Peacebuilders Network funded by AHRC, British Academy, and University of Leeds, addressing peacebuilding through local faith actors in Sri Lanka, Philippines, Burundi, Kenya, and Brazil. She also led projects on anti-trafficking, pastoralist women in India, and faith-based humanitarian response in South Sudan.
Collaborations: She co-chairs the Joint Learning Initiative on Faith and Local Community and the UK Development Studies Association's Religions and Development study group, emphasizing global policy-practice-research integration.
