Professor Helen McCarthy is a historian of modern Britain at the University of Cambridge, where she is Director of Postgraduate Studies and a Professor of Modern and Contemporary British History. Her research spans social, cultural, and political history from the late 19th century to the present, with a focus on gender, work, and diplomatic culture.

- Gender and work in Britain since the 19th century
- Cultural history of diplomacy and internationalism
- Social history of retirement and aging
- Women's political participation and labor dynamics
- Reproductive justice and family policy
