Professor Stephen Alford is Chair in Early Modern British History at the University of Leeds, School of History. His research focuses on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century British political history, particularly the Tudor period and the reign of Elizabeth I. He has held roles including Director of Student Education and Deputy Head of School. Previously, he spent 15 years at the University of Cambridge as a British Academy Fellow, Research Fellow at King’s College, and Teaching Officer.
Qualifications: MA (1993) and PhD (1997) in Modern History from the University of St Andrews. Professional memberships include Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (since 2000).
Research interests include the Cecils, Tudor espionage, and comparative studies of the English and Dutch East India Companies. His major works include Burghley, The Watchers, and All His Spies, which have been shortlisted for prestigious awards like the Marsh Biography Award and the Hessell-Tiltman Prize.
He has supervised nine PhD students (four at Cambridge, five at Leeds) and currently advises Rosalyn Cousins, Chris Toole, and William Poulter. His research groups include Empires and Aftermath, Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums, and War Studies.
