Hafiz Farel F. Shabazz is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Music and Music Education at Dartmouth College, where he serves as Director of the World Music Percussion Ensemble and specializes in ethnomusicology, percussion performance, and nonwestern music traditions.
His educational background includes:
- M.Ed. from Cambridge College
- Studies at the University of Ghana
- Studies at the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil
- Training in Cuba with master drummers and folklorists
Professor Shabazz's research integrates African diaspora music traditions across Ghana, Gambia, Brazil, and Cuba with jazz improvisation. As an initiated member of the Ashanti Nation's Ancestral Shrine in Ghana, he bridges scholarly ethnomusicology with performance practice, having collaborated with icons like Max Roach and Alhaji Bia Konte. His work examines rhythmic structures, cultural transmission, and cross-cultural dialogue through African musical sensibilities.
He directs Dartmouth's World Music Percussion Ensemble, which explores global percussion traditions through performance and pedagogy, reflecting his commitment to experiential music education.
