Gideon F. Alorwoyie is a Professor of Percussion and Director of the UNT African Percussion Ensemble at the University of North Texas (UNT) College of Music, where he has served since 1996. He is also a Paramount Chief (Torgbui Foli Amanyo III) in the Volta Region of Ghana, a title granted in 2004. Alorwoyie is a virtuoso in traditional Ghanaian music and dance, renowned for expanding the expressive range of African drumming.
Originally from Anlo-Afiadenyigba, Ghana, he began his career at the Institute of Art and Culture in Ghana (1964–1984) and later worked at the University of Ghana’s Department of African Studies. His global performances include tours across Europe, Asia, and the Americas with the Ghana National Dance Ensemble. He has collaborated with scholars like David Locke and Steve Reich and holds affiliations with institutions such as the Percussive Arts Society and the Society for Ethnomusicology.
Research interests focus on preserving and performing West African musical traditions, particularly Ewe rituals and dance forms. His creative work includes the book Agbadza: The History and Music of an Ewe War Drum (pending publication) and CDs like Rhythms of Africa. He has led workshops at the University of Hong Kong and performs annually at UNT’s African Cultural Festival.
Grants supported projects like the African Cultural Festival and research on Anlo-Ewe ritual music. His legacy combines academic leadership, cultural ambassadorship, and community engagement through music and dance.
