Howard (Howie) Kaufman is a Lecturer in the Music Department at Cal Poly Humboldt, specializing in Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, and West African percussion. He founded and coordinated the Explorations in Afro-Cuban Dance and Drum workshops (1996–2015), renowned globally for their comprehensive approach to Cuban music and dance. His teaching spans courses like World Percussion Ensemble, Afro-Cuban Percussion, and Music in World Cultures.

Research interests focus on traditional and contemporary percussion practices, including studies in Cuba, Brazil, and Ghana.
