Dr. Kofi J. S. Gbolonyo is a Visiting Assistant Professor and Lecturer in African Music and African Studies at the University of British Columbia's School of Music (part of the Faculty of Arts). He directs the UBC African Music and Dance Ensemble and teaches in the African Studies Minor Program. His roles include founding/directing the Nunya Music Academy, Ghana School Project, and co-founding the Orff-Afrique Summer Programs in Ghana. He is also a teaching staff member of World Music Drumming Workshops Ltd.
Education: PhD & MA in Ethnomusicology (University of Pittsburgh), Graduate Certificate in African Studies (Pittsburgh), BA in Linguistics and Music (University of Ghana, Legon), Professional Dip.Ed in Ewe Language and Music Education (University of Education, Winneba), and Teacher’s Certificate A (E.P. College of Education).
Research focuses on West African traditional music/dance, Ewe indigenous knowledge, and multicultural music education. Key interests include Orff-Schulwerk pedagogy and Ghanaian brass band/choral traditions. He has directed ensembles at UBC, University of Pittsburgh, and University of Ghana.
Global educator: Conducts workshops in Africa, Europe, South America, Asia, and North America. Advocate for multicultural music education with performances at professional conferences worldwide.
Labs/Teams: Directs UBC African Music and Dance Ensemble, leads Nunya Music Academy (children’s music education), and manages Ghana School Project for educational infrastructure in rural Ghana.
