Hafiz F. Shabazz is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at Dartmouth College, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He specializes in ethnomusicology, percussion, and nonwestern music. His work focuses on improvisation, African rhythms, and cross-cultural musical practices.
Education includes an M.Ed. from Cambridge College, studies at the University of Ghana and the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil), and extensive training with master drummers in Cuba and West Africa.
Research interests emphasize traditional African music, jazz improvisation, and the intersection of music and cultural heritage. He is an initiated member of the Ancestral Shrine of the Ashanti Nation in Ghana.
Prior to Dartmouth, he taught at the University of California, Berkeley and Duke University, and lectured at over 500 institutions worldwide. He has performed with renowned artists like Max Roach and Lionel Hampton, and directed the World Music Percussion Ensemble.
His consultancy includes collaboration with John Chernoff on African Rhythms and African Sensibilities, and he has authored articles for the Black Music Research Journal.
