Emmanuel Attah Poku is a Lecturer in the Music Department at Tufts University, specializing in African Music and Dance. Born and raised in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, he began training as a drummer at age five and joined the Ashanti King's drum ensemble at ten. He currently directs the Kiniwe African Music and Dance Ensemble at Tufts and serves as Artistic Director of the Agbekor Drum and Dance Society. His performances include engagements for figures like Angela Merkel, Prince Charles, and African heads of state.
His research interests focus on preserving and promoting West African musical traditions, particularly Ashanti cultural heritage. Poku has toured across Africa and led workshops at institutions including Berklee College of Music, Hartt School of Music, and the University of Michigan.
Despite no listed scientific awards, his contributions to cultural education and performance are widely recognized. His advising and teaching span collaborations with universities worldwide, emphasizing hands-on training in traditional instruments and dance forms.
He maintains active involvement with the Agbekor Society and Kiniwe Ensemble, fostering cross-cultural musical exchange.
