Kerfala Bangoura is the Director of West African Drumming Ensemble and Instructor in the Department of Musicology at the University of Rochester. A native of Conakry, Guinea, he holds certifications from Guinean national ballets and was named “Master Drummer” by the Guinean Ministry of Culture in 2008. He performs with his group Mounafanyi and has received grants supporting his work in cultural arts.
Education & Background:
Received attestation and diploma in drumming and dance from Guinean national ensembles, including Ballet Fareta. Extensive professional experience with national groups like Percussions de Guinée and Les Ballets Africains.
Research & Teaching:
Focuses on West African musical traditions, dance pedagogy, and cultural preservation. Teaches percussion at the University of Rochester and dance classes in the Program of Dance and Movement.

Advising & Grants:
Recipient of regional arts funding. His ensemble Mounafanyi engages in community cultural projects, including performances at Portland’s African Film Festival (2010).
