Gregory Martin is a Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing at the University of New Mexico's Department of English Language and Literature, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. He specializes in creative nonfiction, memoir, and literary journalism. His works include the memoir Stories for Boys and Mountain City, which earned a New York Times Notable Book designation and a Washington State Book Award.
His research focuses on narrative forms such as the personal essay, lyric essay, and blurred boundaries between genres. His essays have been featured in prestigious journals like The Kenyon Review, The Sun, and Image.
Martin has received multiple teaching accolades, including UNM’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award and the College of Arts and Sciences’ Teaching Excellence Award. He actively mentors students in creative writing programs.
His work explores themes of place, identity, and memory, often drawing from personal and regional narratives. Beyond academia, he is known for a notable backyard shed project, which has become a local point of interest.
