Marcia Aldrich is a Professor of Creative Writing at Michigan State University's Department of English. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Washington and a BA from Pomona College. Her editorial leadership includes serving as editor of Fourth Genre (2008-2011), a premier journal for personal essays and memoirs. Aldrich is renowned for her pioneering work in literary nonfiction, blending memoir with critical analysis. She has received prestigious awards including the Amoco Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award and the MSU Alumni Club’s Quality in Undergraduate Teaching Award.
Her research focuses on narrative form, gender studies, and the intersection of personal and cultural identity. Key works include Girl Rearing (1998), a groundbreaking memoir, and Companion to an Untold Story (2012), exploring grief and ethical nonfiction. Recent projects include Waveform: Twenty-First Century Essays by Women (forthcoming from UGA Press) and the narrative Haze about marital dynamics. Aldrich teaches courses such as ENG 223 (Intro to Creative Nonfiction) and ENG 423 (Advanced Creative Nonfiction).
