Jessica Hendry Nelson is an Assistant Professor of English at Virginia Commonwealth University, specializing in creative nonfiction and literary journalism. She teaches and writes at the intersection of grief, addiction, motherhood, and memory, and is the faculty editor for the literary journal Blackbird.

Research Interests: Nelson’s work spans literary nonfiction, lyric essay, and creative writing pedagogy. She is deeply engaged in exploring themes of motherhood, addiction, grief, and the craft of memoir. Her research also includes podcasting as a narrative form and the pedagogy of creative writing.
Her writing is marked by lyrical prose and emotional depth, often blending personal narrative with broader cultural commentary. She has contributed to major literary journals and published three books that have received national acclaim.
