Greg Thomas is an Instructor at the School of Music, James Madison University, specializing in instrumental arranging, improvisation, and jazz band direction. He holds a B.A. and M.M. in Music Education from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Before joining JMU, he spent 34 years in public education, most notably as Band Director at Albemarle High School for 26 years. His recognitions include VBODA Hall of Fame induction (2021), Phi Delta Kappa's 'Outstanding Teacher,' and Charlottesville Jazz Society's 'Jazz Educator of the Year.' His bands achieved state and national acclaim, including 17 Virginia Honor Band awards and multiple jazz festival recognitions.
Active in professional organizations, Thomas is a member of VMEA, VBODA, and Phi Mu Alpha. He frequently presents at state conferences on creativity in instrumental ensembles and maintains an active performance career, collaborating with artists like Gladys Knight and The Temptations.
