Gary Brandes is a Teaching Professor of Music, Director of Bands, and Chair of the Department of Music at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). At UMSL, he conducts the University Wind Ensemble, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in conducting and instrumental literature, and supervises student teachers. Prior to joining UMSL in 2006, Brandes taught in Missouri public schools for 28 years, including roles as Director of Bands at Fort Zumwalt South High School and other institutions.

Research interests focus on wind ensemble conducting, instrumental literature, and music pedagogy. His work bridges practical conducting techniques, historical music interpretation, and modern educational methodologies.
Professional contributions include leadership roles in the Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) and collaborations with jazz and classical ensembles. His most recent articles highlight his advocacy for music education, leadership in wind ensemble performance, and mentorship in instrumental instruction.
