Gerardo Gozzi is a Professor and Area Leader in Creative Musicianship & Improvisation at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where he has taught since 2018. His academic roles include Doctoral Supervisor and leadership in academic programmes. He holds a PhD in Composition from the Royal Academy of Music, with additional studies at the RCM and Academia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. His research explores spatial mental projection, psychoacoustics, and the interplay between sound and space, emphasizing three-dimensional 'sound sculptures' through instrumental techniques and acoustics. Gerardo co-directs the new music group Ensemble Resilience and teaches modules in Stylistic Composition, Improvisation, and Creative Musicianship.
His compositions, performed globally by ensembles like Ensemble InterContemporain and Talea, focus on microtonality, extended techniques, and innovative spatial effects. Notable works include La porte de l’enfer (2016), inspired by Rodin’s sculpture, and Homo Sapiens, all-too-sapiens (2019), a chamber piece using detuned instruments to create a living sound sculpture. Gerardo’s research also integrates historical techniques with modern improvisation, bridging traditional and experimental approaches.
Recent projects include Earworm Variations (2024), a solo trombone piece blending live performance with pre-recorded layers, and The underwater life of a bass clarinet (2020), exploring submerged soundscapes. His work Neutrinos Visiting (2017) uses orchestration to depict subatomic particles’ journeys through matter. Supported by RCM research funds, his compositions often involve interdisciplinary collaborations and spatial experimentation.
Gerardo’s academic contributions include mentoring PhD student Darren Xu and advancing knowledge in composition pedagogy. His artistry spans performance on clarinet and saxophone, with projects like Elephant Foot Clarinet Bells and Barrels investigating woodwind acoustics. Despite no formal awards listed, his innovative approach to spatial sound and pedagogy underscores his influence in contemporary music.
