Gearóid Barry is a Lecturer in Modern European History at the University of Galway. Holding a PhD from Trinity College Dublin (TCD), his academic journey began with a BA in History and Politics from TCD in 1999. His research focuses on modern European history, particularly the legacies of the First World War, French Catholicism, and transnational peace movements.

Barry’s monograph The Disarmament of Hatred (2012) explores Christian Democratic peace activism in post-WWI France and earned him the Scott Bills Memorial Prize (2013). His recent projects analyze the 1920s physical and cultural reconstruction of France, emphasizing religious dimensions and interwar diplomacy. Barry co-edits peer-reviewed volumes on transnational war experiences and contributes to 1914-1918-online, an international encyclopedia of WWI.
His 15 most recent publications span themes like religious pacifism, transnational activism, and cultural legacies of war, appearing in journals like European History Quarterly and Journal of Ecclesiastical History. Collaborations include Oxford University’s AHRC-funded Great War and Global Religions project and the French journal Histoire, Europe et Relations Internationales.
