Suzanne Marchand is the Boyd Professor of European Intellectual History at Louisiana State University. She previously served as assistant and associate professor at Princeton University from 1992 to 1999 before moving to LSU in 1999. Her academic career spans modern European history with particular focus on intellectual and cultural dimensions.
Professor Marchand's research interests encompass European Intellectual History, Classical Archaeology, Oriental Studies, Biblical Criticism, and the History of the Great War. Her work demonstrates a consistent engagement with how European scholars have conceptualized and studied other cultures throughout modern history. She regularly teaches courses on the history of the Great War and its cultural, political, and economic aftermath, connecting historical scholarship with contemporary understanding of 20th century conflicts.
Her most notable publication, German Orientalism in the Age of Empires (2009), represents thirteen years of scholarly work examining German oriental philologies since the Reformation. This research naturally led her to investigate biblical criticism in modern Europe, an area she acknowledges requires further scholarly attention.
Professor Marchand is actively involved in the 'The Book and the Sword' project focusing on 'The Bible in the Experience and Legacy of the Great War,' collaborating with Cambridge University on workshops and study days related to biblical scholarship during WWI.
