Patrick J. Houlihan is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Trinity College Dublin. His research focuses on war, ideology, and religion in European and global contexts from the American Revolution to the present. Previously a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford and a visiting fellow at the British School at Rome, he holds a PhD in History from the University of Chicago. His work examines intersections between Catholicism and conflict, including the Vatican’s role during WWII and humanitarianism across wars.
He has authored two major books: Catholicism and the Great War (2015, Fraenkel Prize winner) and Religious Humanitarianism during the World Wars (2024). His research has been funded by grants from the European Academy of Religion, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK), and the Fulbright Program. He currently collaborates on the Global Pontificate of Pius XII project analyzing Vatican archives.
Teaching includes undergraduate modules on German empires at war, fascism, and 20th-century European history, as well as graduate courses on humanitarianism and human rights. He welcomes students researching topics in European and global history related to war, peace, and ideological movements.
Key awards include the prestigious Fraenkel Prize for his first book. His research spans transnational religious networks, post-war reconstruction, and the Vatican’s diplomatic strategies during global conflicts.
