Stanislas JEANNESSON is Professor of Contemporary History at Nantes Université since 2012, affiliated with the History Department within the Faculty of History, Art History and Archaeology. His academic career includes previous positions as Maître de conférences at Université Paris-Sorbonne (1997-2012) and doctoral studies completed in 1995 under G.-H. Soutou. He holds significant administrative roles including Deputy Director of the Humanities Pole at Nantes Université, Deputy Director of CRHIA research center, and has served on various academic councils and doctoral school leadership positions.
Professor Jeannesson's research focuses on the evolution of diplomatic actors, knowledge, and practices from the 19th century to present day, examined through a global and comparative historical perspective (Europe, Americas). His work particularly emphasizes the international system between 1900-1945, including WWI settlements, the League of Nations, French diplomacy facing Nazism (1930-1939), and the role of experts in international relations. His scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with international historical frameworks and comparative methodologies.
His publication record shows strong activity in recent years with multiple edited volumes and significant contributions to historical understanding of international systems. Notable works include 'The Peace Treaties 1918-1923' (2023), 'Europeans and globalization' (2023), and the second edition of 'Atlas of the Cold War' (2020). His research bridges diplomatic history with broader questions of globalization, knowledge circulation, and international organization development.
Professor Jeannesson maintains active editorial commitments as a member of the editorial boards for Monde(s). Histoire, espaces, relations (where he served as Editor-in-Chief 2011-2021), Relations internationales, and Histoire, Économie et Société. He also contributes to the Commission des Archives diplomatiques and serves as Treasurer of the Institut d'Histoire des relations internationales contemporaines (IHRIC).
His academic leadership extends to doctoral education through his roles as Deputy Director of Doctoral Schools STT and SCE for the Nantes site, and as Coordinator of the International History, Conflicts and Geopolitics (HICG) track in the History Master's program (2017-2023). These positions demonstrate his commitment to training the next generation of historians and international relations scholars.
The Centre de recherches en histoire internationale et atlantique (CRHIA) serves as his primary research base, where he contributes as both Scientific Council member and Deputy Director. This research center provides the institutional framework for his investigations into international and Atlantic historical perspectives, supporting collaborative work across disciplinary boundaries.
