Gary Miller is an Adjunct Professor in the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, and serves as Vice Dean of Research Strategy and Innovation. He previously founded the HERCULES Exposome Research Center at Emory University, the first exposome-focused center in the U.S. His research bridges neuroscience and toxicology, focusing on environmental factors in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's.
Education:
- Ph.D., Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Georgia (1995)
- M.S. and B.S., Old Dominion University (1992 and 1989)
- Postdoctoral training in Molecular Neuroscience at Emory University and Duke University
Research Interests: Miller’s work examines how environmental exposures influence neurological disorders. His laboratory employs diverse experimental techniques, emphasizing the 'exposome' concept—the totality of environmental exposures across a lifetime. Key areas include toxicant mechanisms in neurodegeneration and translational strategies for public health intervention.
Awards & Roles:
- Editor-in-Chief of Exposome journal
- Member, National Academy of Sciences Committee on Emerging Science for Environmental Health Decisions
- Advisory Board Member, HBM4EU (Biomonitoring for the EU)
Grants & Labs: Led the HERCULES Exposome Center, integrating multidisciplinary teams to study environmental health complexities. Current research emphasizes exposome data integration and policy applications.
